Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular Indian festival celebrated to mark the birth of lord Ganesha, son of lord Shiva and goddess Parvati.
Lord Ganesha is believed to bestow his blessing and happiness over its devotees on this day. Ganesha is a god of wisdom, prosperity and success. He is always invoked and thought of on start of something new and important. Ganesha Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi at various places falls at the beginning of shukla chaturthi between 15 august and 20 September. The festive continues for 10 days and end at the Anant chaturdashi according to the Hindi calendar.
The 10 day period is full of various traditions, events and rituals. The festival particularly starts with the installation of an idol of Ganesha in home, worshipping him for 10 days and then at the last day, the idol is supposed to be immersed, known as Ganesha Visarjan, in a spiritual river.
It’s an Indian festival celebrated all over India, but mainly is a south Indian festival. It is a major festival in cities like Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Kerala. Not only in India, is the popularity of Ganesh Chaturthi is carried worldwide by the NRI’s. It is commonly celebrated in Canada, Mauritius, Fuji, Thailand, Malaysia etc.
The preparation of this auspicious festival starts months before. Artisans get into sculpturing beautiful idols of lord Ganesha of big, small sizes. The idols are artistically ostentatious in various poses of Ganesha. The height of idols varies from ¾ of an inch to 70 feet tall.
The most common sweet dish cannot be other than the Modak, a sweet which Ganesha was very fond of. A Modak is a dumpling made of rice or flour with a stuffing of grated coconut, raisins, dry fruits and other rich condiments. Another dish is Kanranji, a dish from Karnataka. It is somewhat same as the Modak only difference being it is semicircular shape.
Few Tips For Pooja Room
- Generally people use spiritual colour for the curtain of pooja room, which is not good. Use always ordinary colour.
- Never place statue in pooja sthal, you can use photographs only.
- Do not everywhere photos og god and goddess, it could become a reason of misunderstanding between the family members.
- Always follow the proper time or muhurta for pooja.
- Never start any pooja in Rahu Kaal
- Pooja sthal should not be on the toilet wall.

God in posters, calendars and printed on other things and can be seen at every wall of a home- The family members will not be happy with each other.
It is good to go at public temple for worshiping or one should follow proper rules and direction for making pooja room.
