According to Hindu calendar, New Year or Nav varsha is starting from 31st and is called VIKRAM SAMVAT 2071. Every year it is celebrated on chaitra shukla pratipada (march-April). It is considered to be a very propitious day as it is believed that on this day Lord Brahma created our world. So this day is also called as Yugadi-Beginningof the World, as yugadi is combination of two words i.e. Yug + Adi where yug stands for world and adi represents beginning.
In southern regions of India people celebrate this day as Gudi Padawa and Ugadi. In Hindu calendar, a month starts from a full moon and ends at the next full moon. It is believed that on this auspicious day Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of matasya. Matsya means a one-horned fish. Matasya is the first avatar among, the Dasha Avatar, i.e. the Ten Incarnations of Lord Vishnu. He incarnated as Matsya to save all the good before the destruction of the world. It is assumed that the Sun is taking position above the Vasant intersection i.e. the point of intersection of equator and meridians.
